چکیده

A teenage girl with a chronic large posterior fossa tumor had primary position right-beating nystagmus with a constant-velocity slow phase. Smooth pursuit was normal to the left but absent to the right. Vestibuloocular move ments were present in both directions. The findings are analogous to downbeat and upbeat nystagmus, in which unidirectional pursuit palsies have been postulated as the pathogenic mechanism. This is the first reported case of a horizontal pursuit defect causing nystagmus.

Eye movement abnormalities in carriers of blue-cone monochromatism.

PURPOSE Although impaired color vision and ERG changes have been detected in carriers of blue-cone monochromatism (BCM), no eye movement abnormalities have been identified. Quantitative eye movements of three obligate carriers of BCM were analyzed. METHODS Horizontal and vertical eye movements of three obligate carriers of two families with BCM with visual acuity of 20/20 or better were recor...

Eye movement deficits following ibotenic acid lesions of the nucleus prepositus hypoglossi in monkeys II. Pursuit, vestibular, and optokinetic responses.

The eyes are moved by a combination of neural commands that code eye velocity and eye position. The eye position signal is supposed to be derived from velocity-coded command signals by mathematical integration via a single oculomotor neural integrator. For horizontal eye movements, the neural integrator is thought to reside in the rostral nucleus prepositus hypoglossi (nph) and project directly...

Epileptic nystagmus: A case report and systematic review

PURPOSE We aimed to define the characteristics of epileptic nystagmus and correlate those with other clinical findings in a large number of patients. METHODS We report a patient with epileptic nystagmus and additionally reviewed the reported clinical features of 36 more patients through a systematic literature search. We analyzed the characteristics of epileptic nystagmus and attempted correl...

Eye movement abnormalities in stiff person syndrome.

The authors describe a 38-year-old woman with stiff person syndrome (SPS) and gaze-holding nystagmus, limited abduction, vertical and horizontal ocular misalignment, deficient smooth pursuit, and impaired saccade initiation. There was no evidence of ocular myasthenia, indicating that abnormalities of ocular motor function can occur as a primary manifestation of SPS, perhaps from depletion of GABA.

Epileptic nystagmus in a patient with nonconvulsive status epilepticus

Epileptic nystagmus (EN) is a rare form of rhythmic eye oscillations occurring during seizure activity. Not only convulsive states, but also nonconvulsive status may represent with EN and this phenomenon may be the only motor manifestation of seizure activity. Epileptic activation of a cortical saccade region may be distinguished from activation of a cortical pursuit region clinically as activa...
